Three generations of men, marked by power, betrayal, and family legacy, struggle to find their way through the ruins of their past in a turbulent Mexico. An epic family saga about power.
Casares, a self-made Mexican entrepreneur, rises from the margins of the city with ambition and intelligence, carrying an inherited emotional wound. After the death of his mother, Rosa—who leaves him with the mandate not to lose himself—he begins a path to success in the forgotten neighborhoods, opening dance halls and informal businesses. His fortune changes when he reconnects with Alejo Serrano and his father, Artemio, a tycoon who welcomes him as a partner. Together they organize artistic tours, but when Casares refuses a deal with foreign investors, Artemio betrays him: he expels him, ruins him, and sends him to prison.
Once free, Casares takes refuge in his electronic hacienda, a secret project symbolizing his independence. There, his son Santiago reappears with his girlfriend Marisa, with whom Casares begins an ambiguous relationship. At the same time, he becomes embroiled in a war with the Serrano corporation and a political operator—the “friend of Muñoz”—who manipulates him and drags him into a power struggle that nearly costs Santiago his life. Weary and defeated, Casares decides to give up the hacienda, break away from the logic of violence, and reorder his life. He rebuilds his relationship with his son, settles down with Belén Gaviño—his lifelong partner—and starts over.
This change leads him to reconnect with his father, Julián, whom he hasn’t seen in more than thirty years. He finds him sick and impoverished but cares for him with compassion until the end. Upon his death, Julián leaves behind papers and memories that drive Casares and his son Santiago to travel to the family’s hometown: Carrizales.
The second part reconstructs the history of the Casares lineage, beginning with Mariano, Julián’s father, a river merchant who, after abandoning his own father, becomes a key figure in founding the town of Carrizales and a leader of the timber empire with military and political backing. His son Julián, determined not to live in his shadow, breaks away, marries Rosa Arango, and starts his own businesses, extending his ambition to the forests of Miranda for exploitation. There he faces natural obstacles and betrayals while maintaining a secret relationship with Nahíma Barudi, torn between desire and family. His project collapses due to a cyclone and a shift in power, and Julián discovers that his father betrayed him by siding with the very business partners who have now abandoned him.
Exiled to the city, Julián tries again, building a store while rekindling his bond with Nahíma and their children. In his later years, he cares for his father Mariano, now defeated by the same power games with which he once betrayed his son. He also faces Rosa’s death and his final disillusionment with a family legacy scarred by fracture and betrayal. Julián dies in peace, reconciled with his story.
In the epilogue, Casares travels with his son Santiago to Carrizales, where, guided by chronicler Presciliano Caín, they discover the ruins and glories of their lineage. Standing before a burning forest, father and son seal a pact with memory, determined to break the inherited family cycle and begin anew in a fairer, more honest way.

El resplandor de la madera (The Glow of Wood) combines family drama, generational saga, and intrigue. Shifting between past and present, the novel paints a sweeping portrait of three generations marked by ambition, the desire for redemption, and traumatic legacy. It is a story of rise and fall, of broken and reconstructed bonds, distinguished by its critical view of power, its conflict between modernity and tradition, and the search for meaning through memory.
