The true story of Consuelito Vello, La Fornarina: a young woman from Madrid who, born into poverty, fought against all odds to become one of the most famous cupletistas of her time. Between the price of fame, the desire for freedom, and the ghosts of her past, this is a dramatic, inspiring, and captivating story.

Consuelito Vello is a young woman from Madrid of humble origins who, in the late 19th century, rebels against poverty and the limits imposed by her environment. At just fourteen years old, she survives alongside her mother, Benita, a tireless laundress, and her father, Laureano, a violent, alcoholic Civil Guard. Unable to keep up with her schooling and forced to help at home, Consuelito is pushed into prostitution in the arcades of Plaza Mayor.

Her fate changes dramatically when Rafael, a young painter captivated by her beauty, offers her the chance to become his muse. Though initially distrustful, Consuelito accepts, entering into an ambiguous relationship with him. At the same time, she finds work as an apprentice in a sewing workshop that turns out to be a high-end brothel. Disillusioned but determined not to give up, she moves forward with the support of her inseparable friends: Pepín Álvarez, an aspiring acrobat, and Alejandro Saint-Aubin, a painter and journalist who becomes her mentor, teaching her to read and write.

The death of her mother marks a turning point: devastated but more determined than ever, Consuelito auditions for the Teatro de la Zarzuela. With Saint-Aubin’s support, she lands a role as an extra, launching her into the artistic world. Her talent leads her to the Salón Japonés, a venue for frivolous performances, where she creates “Rosa de Té,” her stage alter ego. Although plagued by doubts, fame begins to shine on her horizon.

As her career rises, tensions grow. Her relationship with Rafael begins to fracture, especially when she poses nude for Saint-Aubin in exchange for money. But Consuelito refuses to halt her ascent, despite jealousy and emotional conflicts.

Fame brings new threats, but the recently acquainted journalist Cadenas becomes her greatest emotional support, encouraging her to take every step necessary to fulfill her dream and become one of the most acclaimed cupletistas in the country.

Over the years, Consuelito wins over audiences while struggling with inner conflicts and deep personal insecurity. Her profession and relationship with Cadenas take her to Paris, where her fame soars, but her health begins to decline. Suffering from a gynecological illness, she refuses surgery in favor of alternative remedies. Meanwhile, as she mingles with the Parisian elite of the entertainment world, her bond with Cadenas weakens due to jealousy—though he remains her anchor.

In 1913, she returns to Madrid. Though financial difficulties loom, a villa gifted by an anonymous admirer provides some relief. Her return to the stage after her health struggles is triumphant, earning an ovation that proves she is still beloved… though her health will soon falter again.

On July 17, 1915, Consuelito dies at the age of 31 from a generalized infection. In her final moments, she asks for her dragonfly brooch—the symbol of her love for Cadenas, the man who loved her in silence. After her death, he keeps the brooch as the last memory of a woman who, against all odds, transformed pain into art and became a legend.
