Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón (Cantabria, 1942) is a Spanish filmmaker, writer and screenwriter. He won the prestigious Herralde Prize for his novel Life before March in 2009, and he’s member of the Royal Spanish Academy since 2015, occupying Jose Luis Sampedro’s chair, the letter F.

 

INTERESTING FACTS

After a whole life devoted to cinema, he’s focused his creativity on literature. Since 2008, he’s published three novels (Life before March, My Glory and When the cold reaches the heart), all a popular and critical success. Member of the Belles Arts Academy since 2011, and president of SGAE between 1993 and 2001, Gutiérrez Aragón has also received the golden medals from the Spanish Cinema Academy and the Belles Arts Academy (both in 2012).

He has received an extraordinary number of decorations-in addition to the Herralde Prize-, among which stand out: the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for Habla, mudita; the Golden Shell at the San Sebastian Film Festival for Furtivos; the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival for Camada negra; the Goya Award to Best Original Screenplay for Jarrapellejos; and the National Film Award for Best Cinematography.
