Laura Restrepo is a Colombian writer and journalist, internationally recognized for her political activism. She played an important role in the negotiation process with the Colombian guerrilla during the 80s, which forced her to go into exile to Mexico.

Graduated in Philosopy and Literature, she also did a Masters in Political Science. She was a literature professor at the National University of Colombia, but left her job to focus on politics.

She wrote her first tale when she was 9, and, as she grew up she was inspired by authors like William Saroyan, John Steinbeck o Nikos Kazantzakis. While she was working as correspondent for the sandinist revolution, she met Gabriel García Marquez, who was a big influence later on in her work.

Laura Restrepo is a reference in the contemporary Latin-American literature and she is one of the bestselling Hispanic authors in the USA. Her work is highly acclaimed by important critics and it has been translated to many languages, like English, German, Finnish or Greek.

She has been awarded several times, with the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Award, Prix France Culture, Alfaguara of Novel Award and the National Literature Prize of Colombia Award, among others.
