Under the Blue Umbrella (Bajo el paraguas azul)

When an intimate photo of a student goes viral, her world falls apart. Humiliation, isolation, and fear… until her best friend decides to fight by her side. A story as real as it is necessary, already used by NGOs as a key tool in school talks about cyberbullying.

Glauca Rodríguez, a 15-year-old teenager, is going through a rough time: she feels lonely, her parents are on the verge of divorce, and her self-esteem is at rock bottom, crushed by social pressure and beauty standards at school. When Sergio, one of the most popular boys, starts paying attention to her, she gets her hopes up. Tricked by him, she sends him a photo in her underwear. But it was all a setup: Sergio is actually dating Andrea, who receives the picture and spreads it on social media, leading to Glauca’s public humiliation.

The photo goes viral, edited with insults, and Glauca becomes the target of mockery and threats. The school barely intervenes, handing out only mild punishments. At home, things get worse: her father Manuel hits her, and her mother Lucía suffers humiliation at work. In the middle of it all, her only support is Alberto, her best friend, who slowly realizes he feels more than friendship for her. Alberto gathers a group of classmates to collect evidence and report the cyberbullying. Sergio, now remorseful, admits Andrea manipulated him and reveals that she is the daughter of Lucía’s lover.

The conflict escalates: Andrea assaults Glauca in the school bathroom and forces her to swallow pills to stage a suicide attempt. Glauca is left unconscious, and Alberto finds her and rushes her to the hospital in critical condition, where she falls into a coma. The police investigation continues, and Andrea is arrested.

During Glauca’s months-long hospitalization, Alberto stays by her side, reading her letters and caring for her. Little by little, Glauca recovers, her parents reconcile, and she admits to Alberto that she loves him too. Returning to school, she is welcomed warmly, and together they travel to London, fulfilling a shared dream. Under the rain, they kiss for the first time, sheltered by a blue umbrella — a symbol of protection, hope, and love.

RELEVANT DATA: Elena Martínez Blanco, a former teacher turned bookseller, is widely known in Spain for organizing cultural events that promote reading, especially among children and young people. Her novel Bajo el paraguas azul (Under the Blue Umbrella) was an instant success that also established her as a writer. Often compared to 13 Reasons Why but with a more hopeful narrative, it delivers a powerful portrait of gender violence and school bullying, with a special focus on the mistakes and omissions of the adults who should protect. Both moving and practical, it has become a reference tool for NGOs, who use it in school programs on cyberbullying and emotional education. The novel sold out its first print run in just one week, cementing its status as a must-read for young people, families, and educators.

With its twists, multi-character storytelling, and emotional depth, the novel is a perfect fit for a contemporary YA series in the vein of Euphoria, 13 Reasons Why, or One of Us Is Lying — but with a more hopeful and restorative perspective.
