Taking command of the Regulators, he becomes a central figure in the bloody Lincoln County War, a conflict marked by ambushes, gunfights, and the killing of Sheriff Brady. The violence transforms Billy into both a notorious fugitive and a folk hero in a land where justice is written with bullets.

Amid this turbulent life, Billy meets Melba, a young mixed-race woman who captivates him. Their romance is born in tragedy: during a robbery, Billy shoots and kills her uncle Bernstein rather than back down. Devastated, Melba nonetheless finds herself drawn to the outlaw’s irresistible charisma. She eventually becomes his partner, hidden away with him in Fort Sumner. There, among passionate nights and whispered promises, tenderness and violence coexist. Melba prays for Billy every day, while Billy watches her closely, fearing both her love and the possibility of betrayal.

But the net is tightening. Pat Garrett, once Billy’s friend and drinking companion, accepts the sheriff’s badge and takes on the mission of bringing him to justice. Despite their mutual respect, both men know that only one of them will survive. Billy is eventually betrayed, captured, and sentenced to hang. For a moment, the law appears to have prevailed.

Yet Billy the Kid refuses to go quietly. In one of the most legendary escapes in Western history, he kills two guards and rides to freedom, laughing in the face of justice.

His final refuge is once again Fort Sumner and the embrace of Melba. Together they live like an outlaw husband and wife, even though fate has already written the ending. On the night of July 14, 1881, Pat Garrett surprises Billy in the darkness and kills him with a single shot.
