An ordinary couple sees their life turned upside down when he—an editor by trade—becomes obsessed with the mysterious manuscript of a new neighbor who is as fascinating as she is unsettling. What begins as literary curiosity soon turns into a dangerous investigation within their own home that will test their marriage and… their lives. Part dark comedy, part domestic thriller, this is an extremely entertaining novel.
Cristian and Míriam are an apparently ordinary couple expecting their second child when they meet their mysterious new neighbours, Juan and Sara. What begins as a cordial relationship becomes increasingly complicated when Cristian, an editor by profession, reads the manuscript Sara hopes to publish as her first novel. He finds himself drawn not only to the book, but also to its author. Yet something feels wrong. Cristian and Míriam both sense that something unsettling lies beneath their neighbours’ polished façade — and their suspicions seem confirmed when Juan apparently commits suicide by jumping from the balcony.
Míriam becomes obsessed with the case and begins investigating Sara’s past, pulling Cristian into the mystery with her. But neither of them knows where to begin. After all, they are not police officers.
Things take a darker turn when Cristian spots Juan alive on the street weeks after his supposed death. Determined to uncover the truth, he secretly travels to Madrid without telling Míriam, worried that their growing obsession is already damaging their relationship. There, he discovers that Juan had a mentally unstable twin brother named Toni, and begins to suspect that Juan may have faked his own suicide using his brother’s corpse.
The investigation continues in Sara’s hometown of Ambite, where an old schoolteacher hints that Sara may have been involved in the mysterious death of a classmate years earlier.
Back in Barcelona, Cristian follows Sara to her restaurant and makes a horrifying discovery: Juan’s stabbed corpse hidden inside a walk-in freezer, preserved until it can be secretly disposed of. Cristian and Míriam finally piece together Sara’s real secret. After staging Juan’s suicide with her brother-in-law’s body, Sara ultimately murdered her husband in order to inherit the restaurant and family fortune.
The story reaches its delirious climax when Cristian and Míriam decide to confront Sara in her apartment. The situation spirals out of control: Sara attacks them with a golf club, Míriam’s water breaks in the middle of the struggle, and during the violent confrontation Sara accidentally falls from the balcony to her death. Officially, the case is closed as a suicide. For the police, the mystery is solved. But only Cristian and Míriam know the full truth.
An unbelievable story that begs one final question: could it become a novel itself?
