Erhard Hess Kersten grew up among Munich’s upper classes and was a close friend of Heinrich Himmler long before he became one of the principal architects of the Third Reich. Raised in a world of privilege but also steeped in radical ideology, Erhard initially questions the beliefs of his family, until his fate becomes entwined with the rise of Nazism.
Recruited by Ernst Röhm for a secret mission, he is sent to Warsaw under a false identity. His objective is clear: infiltrate the Jewish community and produce intelligence reports that will feed the growing machinery of repression operated by the NSDAP.
To carry out his mission, Erhard undergoes a forced circumcision that leaves a permanent mark on both his body and his identity. Settling in Poland under the guise of a businessman, he befriends Nicolás Kliksberg, a Jewish cobbler whose kindness, integrity, and humanity gradually dismantle Erhard’s prejudices. Through Nicolás, he meets Helena, Nicolás’s sister, and falls deeply in love with her. Their clandestine relationship places him on the razor’s edge between betrayal and redemption.
Meanwhile, Himmler rises rapidly through the Nazi hierarchy, consolidating the SS and becoming increasingly obsessed with racial purity and absolute power. Through letters and encounters between the two men, a growing contrast emerges: Himmler’s fanaticism against Erhard’s mounting doubts and moral crisis. Caught between loyalty to the regime and his love for Helena, Erhard is drawn into internal conspiracies such as Operation Snake, a failed attempt to eliminate Hitler before his appointment as Chancellor.
As Nazism’s grip tightens across Europe, Erhard’s life becomes an unbearable contradiction. He continues to serve the apparatus of repression while secretly trying to protect his Jewish loved ones and plan their escape. His personal tragedy unfolds alongside major historical events—the Reichstag Fire, Kristallnacht, and the invasion of Poland—driving him toward a devastating fate.
Determined to flee and reunite with Helena and their daughter in Brazil, Erhard is stopped during a routine health inspection. In a cruel twist of fate, the circumcision that once allowed him to infiltrate the Jewish community now leads authorities to mistake him for a Jew. Arrested and deported to the Neuengamme concentration camp, he becomes a victim of the very system he helped sustain.
Trapped inside the machinery of terror he once served, Erhard experiences the ultimate irony and punishment. The novel closes with Helena’s voice, writing a letter to their daughter. Through her words, she rescues him from historical condemnation and remembers him not as a perpetrator, but as a flawed man who became trapped in evil and spent his life searching for redemption.
