Father Cigarette (El padre pitillo)

Don Froilán is a priest in a small village, in which he is known as “Father Cigarette”, as he always has a lit cigarette in his mouth. Given his good-natured disposition, he sees himself one day taking in a deviant girl called Rosita, kicked from her house by his step-father Aniceto after losing her honor with the rich boy of the village, Bernabé, and getting pregnant.

 

RELEVANT FACTS: This play was a big success in Buenos Aires (Argentina) during the Spanish Civil War. It is considered one of the best comedies of the author. It was taken to the big screen in a Chilean production by Roberto de Ribón, and a Spanish version directed by Juan de Orduña.

Arniches was part of the brilliant Generation of ’98, and comedies were his specialty. Many of his plays were adapted to cinema.
