God’s soul (Alma de Dios)

Eloisa is an orphan that runs away from a house where she is abused. She seeks refuge in the house of her aunt Marcelina and her cousin Irene. Also, she meets Agustin, a young man who she falls in love with. But she is victim of a ploy plotted by the aunt. Her cousin Irene has had a child outside her marriage, and the aunt registers him as Eloisa’s, trying to protect her daughter. The child is hidden, but the ploy cannot last much more, nor prevent Eloisa and Agustin from being together.

 

RELEVANT FACTS: In this play, Arniches uses resources from melodrama and comedy. His characters are costumbrist and the ending is happy.

Arniches was part of the brilliant Generation of ’98, and comedies were his specialty. Many of his plays were adapted to cinema.
