Extended title
Portrait of a Generation That Transformed Music in Spain (Retrato de una generación que transformó la música en España)
A key work for understanding how a generation changed the sound of a country. This chronicle gives voice to the protagonists of Andalusian rock—a fusion of progressive rock and flamenco born in the 1970s that forever transformed Spanish music. A cultural and emotional journey through the story of a sonic revolution.
Historia del Rock Andaluz (The History of Andalusian Rock) is the first in-depth editorial portrait of a unique musical phenomenon that emerged in 1970s Andalusia: Andalusian rock. Journalist Ignacio Díaz Pérez reconstructs this movement with the precision of a chronicler and the ear of a true music lover, giving voice to its real protagonists.
Divided into three parts, the book begins with the roots: a series of early experiments—such as Sketches of Spain or Rock Encounter—that proved the fusion of flamenco with Anglo sounds was possible. It then moves on to focus on Smash and the Dom Gonzalo Club, one of the cultural underground’s epicenters, nourished by the music brought by American soldiers stationed at the Rota and Morón military bases in Andalusia. The first part concludes by tracing the origins of Triana, the cornerstone of the entire movement.
The second part is dedicated to the leading figures of the fully-formed and recognizable movement, featuring the iconic album covers by painter Máximo Moreno and emblematic bands like Triana, Alameda, Cai, Imán Califato Independiente, and Medina Azahara.
The third part explores the alternative paths that branched off from this movement, such as the rock-flamenco of Veneno, Camarón, Enrique Morente, or Tabletom—albums that are essential milestones in the history of Spanish music.
Above all, the book is a choral narrative in which musicians, producers, and direct witnesses recount how this unmistakable sound was born—one that defied labels and turned Andalusian identity into something modern and universal. In the author’s words, this music “did not arise out of nowhere,” but reflected a changing social and political context, where underground culture and musical experimentation became acts of freedom.
