A teenage girl disappears. A young journalist and a retired reporter discover that the truth is darker than anyone could have imagined. From internationally acclaimed bestselling author Axat, an intense thriller with the pulse of Euphoria and unforgettable drama.
Camila Jones, a renowned journalist who retired after a brilliant television career, lives in isolation on Queen Island, North Carolina. When Tim Doherty, a young local reporter, asks for her help investigating the disappearance of Sophia Holmes—a brilliant teenager from the area—Camila resists. But soon the details of the case and the involvement of her old rival, Vince Naroditsky, reignite her professional instincts. Aware that something murky lies behind the official version of suicide, she agrees to get involved—but only on one condition: she sets the rules of the investigation.
Through flashbacks and multiple voices, the novel reconstructs the months leading up to Sophia’s disappearance. The young girl, rational and observant, struggles with broken friendships, adolescent secrets, and a family in crisis. But one event changes her life forever: her best friend, Janice, is secretly recorded during a sexual encounter with Dylan Garrett, a fellow student. Sophia uncovers clues pointing to Dylan’s father and to a far-reaching pedophile ring much larger than she ever imagined. Little by little, Camila and Tim’s investigation begins to reach the same conclusions.
In the second half of the novel, we discover that Sophia is being held captive in a basement, watched over by a mysterious man named Mike. Far from acting threatening, he offers her a sense of safety—something that doesn’t quite add up to Sophia. She begins to build a closer relationship with him to uncover who he really is. Meanwhile, Camila and Tim discover that the FBI is closing in on the pedophile network, which involves more than 10,000 people through the deep web and is about to be dismantled. Sophia’s father, Phil Holmes, was part of the network and tried to cover it up.
Mike seems to know everything the FBI is planning, and he promises Sophia she will be free soon: it is then revealed that Mike only staged Sophia’s suicide in order to abduct her and protect her from the network, which wanted her dead for knowing too much.
On the day of the operation against the network, Mike—who never fully revealed his true identity—fails to return to Sophia, leaving her to fear the worst. She decides to leave her hiding place on her own, only to fall into the hands of Lenderman, the school principal and one of the network’s leaders. Just as he is about to assault her, Camila bursts in and kills him with a gunshot. Sophia survives, hands her father over to the FBI, and, like all those involved in the case, begins a new life in New York after helping dismantle the country’s largest pedophile and child pornography network.
