What the Dead Keep Silent | A Killer in Your Shadow | The Dead Can’t Swim

Gracia San Sebastián returns to her hometown of Oviedo to investigate financial fraud, only to find herself drawn into far darker crimes. Murders, international mafias and long-buried family secrets force her to confront her own past. As she unravels increasingly complex criminal cases, Gracia must also face her personal demons: a broken marriage, the loss of her son and the difficult decision of whether to trust love again.

Gracia San Sebastián is a former Wall Street executive who, after the tragic death of her son, leaves behind her successful financial career in New York and returns to her hometown of Oviedo to reinvent herself as a fraud investigator. Intelligent, meticulous and gifted at uncovering complex financial schemes, Gracia moves between the world of high finance and its darkest criminal underworld.

Her personal life is equally turbulent. She is still grieving the loss of her son, struggling with her failing marriage to Jorge Quirán, navigating a complicated relationship with her new partner Rodrigo Villarreal, and dealing with her outspoken mother, Adela.

Set in northern Spain, the series combines financial investigations with murder mysteries, subtle humor and a fast-paced narrative that never loses momentum.

In What the Dead Keep Silent, Gracia becomes intrigued by the death of Sofía Álvarez, a neighbor who has apparently committed suicide by throwing herself into the courtyard of her apartment building. The carefully staged scene, complete with a suicide note, does not fit the profile of an impulsive act, raising Gracia’s suspicions.

At the same time, she investigates a long-running fraud: someone has been collecting the pension of a deceased military officer for decades. Eventually, both investigations converge on Sofía’s family.

As she digs deeper, Gracia uncovers a deeply dysfunctional family built on dependence and secrets. Sofía has spent years financially supporting her sister Carmina and her nephew through the pension fraud.

The truth proves even more disturbing: the nephew is actually the child of an incestuous relationship between Carmina and her own brother. Sofía has protected this secret her entire life. When she decides to end the fraud, Carmina attempts to poison her to stop her. After discovering the betrayal, Sofía consciously chooses suicide rather than expose her family to scandal, ruin and the revelation of their terrible secret.

Meanwhile, Gracia struggles with the emotional distance of her husband Jorge and the grief over her late son, while an undeniable chemistry begins to develop between her and Rodrigo Villarreal, her lawyer and client.

In A Killer in Your Shadow, the disappearance of Imelda Alborán catches Gracia’s attention, prompting her to investigate unofficially. Soon afterward, the case turns violent when Imelda’s decapitated body is discovered on railway tracks. Although the scene suggests suicide, it is completely inconsistent with her character.

As Gracia investigates Imelda’s life, she discovers hidden connections to prostitution and learns that she was pregnant by Pelayo Granda, a pimp with international criminal ties. Similarities with other deaths ruled as suicides or accidents begin to emerge.

The trail leads to one common figure: Lola Estébanez, Pelayo’s ex-wife. The investigation reveals that Lola is driven by obsessive jealousy and an overwhelming need for control. She drugs her victims, strips them of their will, and stages their deaths to resemble suicides, eliminating any perceived romantic rival.

Gracia uncovers the pattern and exposes Lola as a serial killer responsible for a string of murders that had remained hidden for years beneath the appearance of accidental deaths.

In her personal life, Jorge moves to New York with another woman, while Gracia begins a relationship with Rodrigo Villarreal amid the emotional uncertainty of starting over.

In The Dead Can’t Swim, the severed arm of Alfredo Santamaría, Chief Financial Officer of InverOriental, washes ashore on a beach in Gijón. Now officially collaborating with the police, Gracia investigates the company and discovers that it serves as a front for laundering Romanian mafia money through fraudulent real estate transactions.

Santamaría’s murder is ultimately linked to a family revenge plot: years earlier, he ran over Jacobo Hernández’s girlfriend and fled the scene, leading her family to kill him.

The investigation ends with the arrest of those responsible for the money-laundering operation, although the Romanian mafia eliminates several of those involved before justice can fully catch up with them.

Personally, Gracia finally resolves her conflict with Jorge, who agrees to the divorce before moving to China. She also solidifies her relationship with Rodrigo, with whom she plans to build a future and have children, bringing to a close a chapter of her life defined by grief and uncertainty.
