The slab of dreams (La losa de los sueños)

Rosina lives with her mother Mrs. Rosa and her two sisters, Leonor and Estela, in absolute poverty, in the poorest part of the city. They survive thanks to the self-interested support that a gentleman, Don Paco, gives to Mrs. Rosa. The family’s only hope is the marriage of the girls. Rosina, intellectually curious, often attends to social gathering in cafes. One day, in a gathering she meets Enrique, a man from a rich family and they start dating. Everything seems to be going well but one day Rosina gets pregnant and Enrique, who has another rich girlfriend, abandons Rosina and his future son. Facing the reprisals of her mother and sisters about her absence, she starts looking for a job, not like her mother and sisters who are waiting for someone to take care of them, but she only has the support of her friend Cipriano, who is deeply in love with her.

RELEVANT FACTS: This play is a social drama in which all 20 characters have their own plot, opposed to works such as Malquerida or The Lady of the House, that would be rural dramas. It is a fascinating story in which seduction, power and conflict of interests are driving these characters.

Benavente won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1922. He treated all the theatrical genres and developed a broad gallery of human characters. Many of his plays have been taken to cinema with success and many versions for TV have been made. Benavente’s dialogues are excellent, full with irony. He has been compared to Oscar Wilde.
