The Winter We Took Matters into our Hands (El invierno que tomamos cartas en el asunto)

A chain of solidarity that changed the life of a town.

Winter arrives in Porvenir, a town surrounded by mountains that remained the same for many years. Sara, the postwoman, receives bad news: since no one writes letters anymore, they have decided to close the post office in town and transfer her somewhere else. She grew up in those streets of stone and slate and cannot see herself anywhere else. But she is a single mother of three children and has no other choice.

Rosa, her neighbor, an octogenarian widow, doesn’t see herself without her beloved Sara and the children. She was there when Sara was born, and she saw her growing up. As time passed, she became her only family. And so she spends a whole night trying to figure out what she can do to avoid her leaving.

Rosa decides then to start a chain of letters that will last the whole winter. We will get to know the different recipients who will receive and send the letters: a 23 year old girl who loves reading, a renowned poet in a bad moment, a young man taking care of his father with Alzheimer’s disease, an almost illiterate housewife, etc. Sara’s sack gets bigger with more and more letters every day. Until one day, when she cannot hand one of the letters and decides to open it. She discovers what’s happening and, touched by the town’s support, decides to continue the chain including Karol, an immigrant woman who works as a cleaning lady. She is also very moved and continues the chain as well.

The chain of letters ends up becoming way more than that. The inhabitants of Porvenir grow closer, new loves spark, new friendships, the forgiveness of enemies, the reconnection of old friends who had been distant… letters have awaken its community, their hopes and their dreams.
