Laws of Fire | The Fall of Ice | The Summit of Air
After infiltrating the company of his sister’s killer, a man executes a revenge that uncovers a network of abuse, corruption, and organized crime. What begins as a personal vendetta evolves into a conspiracy connecting murder, drug trafficking, and economic power at the heart of Barcelona. A thriller trilogy full of action, twists, and unforgettable characters.
The Vidar Trilogy is a powerful thriller saga set in Barcelona that explores, through three installments, the ties between organized crime, corporate corruption, family trauma, and the limits of justice.
In Laws of Fire, the first book in the trilogy, Óliver Segarra, an apparently respectable businessman, begins a secret war against the Evertons for control of the company where he is a partner, Everton Quality, while seeking revenge for the death of his sister Ariadna. His battle targets John Everton, the company’s CEO, and Brian, his heir.
Óliver hires Marek, a feared mobster, and his hitmen to carry out his revenge. The first target of Marek’s men is Gabriel Radebe, a shareholder in Everton Quality, whose murder draws the attention of the police—particularly Sergeant Aitor Ruiz. Suspicion toward Óliver increases when, shortly after Radebe’s death, he takes control of his shares… Meanwhile, in the criminal underworld, Xavi and Artur, two young drug dealers eager to move up in the business, receive an offer from Marek to join his network, dragging them into a far more dangerous world than they imagined.
A few days later, Brian Everton disappears and is found brutally murdered.
As the investigation progresses, Aitor begins to connect the recent crimes to Ariadna’s unsolved case. He soon discovers that Óliver is her brother and has been executing a years-long plan to infiltrate the company and avenge Ariadna’s rape and murder, which he believes—with no conclusive evidence—were committed by John Everton. Until then untouchable, Everton turns out to be a sexual predator and murderer wanted for decades, protected by a network of corrupt police officers.
Gradually, Marek forces Xavi and Artur to carry out increasingly dangerous missions. Eventually, it is Xavi, with the help of Jósef, another of Marek’s hitmen, who kidnaps John Everton. After confessing his crime, Everton is executed in cold blood by Óliver. The police lack sufficient evidence to prosecute him. Sergeant Ruiz senses that, although he cannot arrest him, Óliver has fulfilled his revenge.
In the second installment, The Fall of Ice, Óliver Segarra fights to maintain full control of Everton Quality after John Everton’s death, while Sergeant Aitor Ruiz tackles a new case: a brutally tortured corpse is found wrapped in a carpet at the same “Ground Zero” where unsolved crimes linked to Everton Quality occurred a year earlier. Though the case seemed closed, new clues reopen old wounds. Aitor, still burdened by past mistakes, sees a chance for redemption, while Óliver begins to pay a high price to retain power, as the ghosts of his past threaten to destroy everything. As the investigation unfolds, the connections between murders, revenge killings, and drug trafficking networks become increasingly clear.
In The Summit of Air, the third book in the Vidar Trilogy, Sergeant Aitor Ruiz faces an elite criminal network operating from the shadows. After the arrest of businessman Óliver Segarra for the murder of his partner, the case takes an unexpected turn when Segarra, from prison, hands over a folder containing information that exposes an international organization involved in kidnapping, sexual abuse, and murder—with the involvement of powerful businessmen and financial elites. As the investigation advances amid threats, cover-ups, and family secrets, Aitor and his team race against time and a system designed to protect the wealthy and influential guilty, who will stop at nothing to silence the truth.
RELEVANT INFORMATION: Sergio Milán-Jerez is a Spanish writer best known for the Vidar Trilogy, which he began publishing in 2017. Author of other novels as well, he received an Honorable Mention at the 2024 International Latino Book Awards. He is currently working on a new sequel that will continue the story of the protagonists from the Vidar Trilogy.
The Vidar Trilogy masterfully combines elements of thrillers, contemporary crime novels, and emotionally intense criminal drama. From its beginning in Laws of Fire, through The Fall of Ice and The Summit of Air, the story moves forward with a steady narrative pace, unfolding a mosaic of complex characters and an intricate web of crimes, family secrets, institutional corruption, and structural violence. Set in a tense and recognizable yet shadowy Barcelona, the saga follows a polyphonic structure where police officers, businesspeople, victims, mobsters, and informants intersect in a chain of personal and moral conflicts that intensifies with each volume.
The psychological depth and development of its characters make this a clear example of character-driven storytelling, though the plot’s complexity and constant twists also give significant weight to the narrative itself. Its puzzle-like structure, sustained tension, and evolving conflicts across the three volumes make it an ideal candidate for a long-format screen adaptation. The story lends itself to an episodic series or a three-act film structure and can be relocated to any setting.
