An Instant | (Un)expected | Disordered Order

The story of an actor, a journalist, and an actress trapped between fame, desire, and violence—where love becomes the most radical form of resistance.

In An Instant, Carlos, a Spanish actor turned Hollywood star, lives in California surrounded by luxury but imprisoned by the loneliness born of the choices that shaped his career. When he travels to the Cannes Film Festival to premiere his new film, memories of the past resurface: it was there that he met James, a French journalist he ultimately abandoned out of fear and ambition.

In Madrid, Sara, Carlos’s ex-girlfriend, continues her life as an actress and dancer, feeling stagnant and frustrated as she watches Carlos’s overwhelming success on television. She maintains a sporadic but cordial relationship with James, whom she deeply appreciates despite their complicated shared past.

James is working in Caracas, Venezuela, as a correspondent covering the protests against the Maduro regime. Despite the danger, he feels fulfilled. However, during an assault on the hotel where he and other journalists are staying, he is kidnapped by an armed group and gravely injured. He fights to survive the torture and misery of captivity, sustained only by the memories of Carlos.

Upon hearing the news, Carlos asks Sara to meet him in Cannes to devise a plan to rescue James. Together with Kate, his co-star in the film—whose father owns a private security agency—they craft a daring plan: while a special team attempts to rescue James in Caracas, Carlos and Kate create a media distraction on the red carpet by pretending to be a couple. The operation succeeds, and James is transported in critical condition to the United States.

Meanwhile, the scandal erupts in the media: Carlos’s supposed relationship with Kate is overshadowed by leaked photos with Sara, damaging his image and career. Though shaken, Carlos decides to take control of the narrative. Weeks later, he publicly announces that he is bisexual. In Los Angeles, he visits James in the hospital. His public confession has already made headlines, and the two share a kiss that seals their reunion. Driving together along the coast, Carlos gives James the ring he had kept for years and tells him that he is his home. Tearfully, James accepts—they are ready to start a life together, hiding no longer and accountable to no one but themselves.

The second installment, (Un)expected, follows Sara, Carlos, and James one year after the kidnapping in Venezuela. All three face the price of fame and personal trauma—but above all, the homophobia within the film industry. Sara achieves success with the film EVA, though her private life crumbles until she reconciles with her husband, Enrique. Carlos, now an unwilling LGTBI symbol, faces hate and threats that culminate in an attack at his own home, leaving him seriously wounded. James, scarred by post-traumatic stress, becomes his anchor as they face media persecution and extremist harassment. The ending offers a fragile yet hopeful balance: Sara consolidates her career, while Carlos and James—more united than ever—stand as symbols of resistance and authenticity.

In a near future marked by climate collapse and the dominance of artificial intelligence, Disordered Order explores the struggle to recover the true memory of Carlos, who died fifteen years earlier. A film studio has exploited his image, creating a digital avatar that continues to act, distorting his legacy. James, his widower, travels to the Cannes Festival to present a documentary about the real Carlos, only to uncover a greater conspiracy: a military organization has created a robotic prototype with Carlos’s appearance and personality, designed to become a soldier in a new generation of wars. But the robot—endowed with Carlos’s morality and conscience—refuses to carry out immoral orders. Realizing that he will never feel as a human and that his existence only serves the machinery of war, he sacrifices himself, letting the flames consuming Cannes take him, ensuring that his image will never again be used for manipulation.

The trilogy combines melodrama, political thriller, and speculative science fiction in a narrative arc that evolves from the intimate to the global—always keeping questions of identity at the center of contemporary life. From its romantic and emotional core, it weaves a powerful and ambitious story that blends genres (romance, action, social commentary, dystopia) into a cinematic tapestry.

The presence of three well-defined protagonists—Carlos, James, and Sara—ensures a strong human axis that sustains continuity throughout the saga.
