Triumphant Soul (Alma triunfante)

Every year, the happily married couple of Luis and Isabel celebrates Isabel and their daughter’s saint´s day, but this year fate prepares a drastic and tragic change in their lives: in a fatal accident, the child dies. The pain of losing her daughter drives Isabel mad, to the point that she moves into a mental illness hospital, where Luis cannot visit her. The only news he has about his wife are given to him by Emilia, the young nurse that looks after her.

 

RELEVANT FACTS: In 1950 the story was adapted into a movie format by a specialist of the melodramatic genre, Luis Lucia.

Benavente won the Nobel Prize in Literature (1922). He treated all the theatrical genres and developed a broad gallery of human characters. Many of his plays have been taken to cinema with success and many versions for TV have been made. Benavente’s dialogues are excellent, full with irony. He has been compared to Oscar Wilde.
