Ulises 2300

Does being good at something make you passionate about it?

In the 1980s, Salomón “Crazy Horse” Narváez, a university professor and a chess lover, takes pride on leading a quiet and peaceful life. One of his main activities is writing a weekly column about the science of sports in a newspaper, with a chess puzzle at the end. But when he makes a mistake in the problem due to his anger towards his teenage son Alan, he receives a letter from someone named Ulises Bernal. Ulises doesn’t just state that the puzzle isn’t phrased correctly, but he also provides a solution that no one else had noticed.

Impressed, Salomón continues sending chess puzzles to Ulises, who always solves them correctly. Salomón decides to meet him in person and, when they meet, discovers that Ulises Bernal is actually a thin, 14-year-old boy wearing glasses, a young prodigy.

From that moment on, Salomón has a new mission in life: to foster Ulises’ career in the world of chess, create a legacy, and impress his former mentor. But Ulises is as brilliant in the game as he is insecure about himself, and he is not interested in chess triumphs.

As the story unravels, Salomón tries to persuade Ulises to fully develop his potential with the chessboard, a strategy that includes help and advice to win over Marina Iturralde, the reason why Ulises attends cooking classes. He devises a plan for his son Alan to help him get closer to Marina, and thus convinces Ulises to participate in some national chess tournaments. However, the young man decides to quit and lose on purpose because what truly fascinates Ulises is music and singing in the choir where Marina performs. Their romance is cut short when he sees Marina kissing another classmate, which leads him to abandon everything, including chess, and disappear.

Although he is a genius, Ulises is, above all, a young man who is trying to find his place in the world. His personal journey will also impact Salomón’s life and make him reflect on what success truly means and how when you are young you have to make your own path.
