Communications with the outside world are cut off, the garbage truck does not arrive, and the arrival of the justice officer who must shut down the prison has been delayed for over a week.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">The few men who remain \u2014the elderly cook Valdenio, the restless Pablo, the imposing Bronco Gil, and the guard Taborda\u2014 survive in an atmosphere of desolation, watched by Melqu\u00edades, the warden, whose madness grows day by day. And the prisoners do not escape because they wear ankle monitors with explosives.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Melqu\u00edades has transformed the colony into his own hunting ground. On full moon nights, he selects some prisoners, removes the electronic ankle monitors that bind them to the prison, and hunts them with his rifle as if they were animals.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">The bodies are buried by the inmates themselves in mass graves. One night, while digging a grave for two murdered prisoners, Bronco, Pablo, and Taborda unearth an old trunk. Inside there is no gold, as Taborda had hoped in a flash of greed, but small, fragile bones: the remains of babies. A vestige of the place\u2019s macabre history, a site where slaves were tortured and killed. The colony\u2019s soil is filled with the dead.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Pablo, knowing he will be next, refuses to die and discovers that a section of the electrified fence does not work. When Melqu\u00edades selects him along with Jota for the hunt, Pablo runs toward that section, throws a rope, and climbs the wall. He escapes into the night while Melqu\u00edades, driven mad, chases him in his off-road vehicle.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Pablo does not return. Melqu\u00edades does not return either.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">The next day, when the tension is unbearable, the justice officer, Heitor, arrives. He brings with him an amnesiac man, filthy and disoriented, whom he found on the road. It is Melqu\u00edades, who has lost his memory after a blow to the head during the pursuit. Heitor, without knowing it, locks him in the underground cells as if he were just another prisoner.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Heitor reviews the files and discovers that thirty-nine inmates are missing. He pressures Taborda, who finally breaks: the men are buried all over the grounds. Taborda confesses the horror of the hunts, the complicity of his silence, and the discovery of the trunk. But Melqu\u00edades recovers his memory. He leaves the cell, arms himself with the arsenal he kept in his office, and kills Taborda with a shot. Then, from the gate, he kills Valdenio, who had finally discovered that the ankle monitors would never explode and had dared to cross.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Heitor, wounded in the arm by a gunshot, allies with Bronco Gil to confront the warden. In the middle of a nighttime storm, Bronco, with the patience of a seasoned hunter, locates Melqu\u00edades and drives an arrow into his throat. At dawn, Heitor removes his ankle monitor. Bronco buries Valdenio outside the wall, where the old man had always wanted to be, and sets off without direction.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">A truck driver named Milo picks him up. Milo offers him work as a foreman on his ranch. Bronco accepts. As the truck drives away along the dusty road, the horizon opens wide before him.
