At sixteen, Marta experiences the vertigo of first love when she meets Charlie, an older, popular boy she initially dislikes but soon becomes obsessed with. They begin a secret relationship: he is affectionate in private but ignores her in public, making it clear he does not want to be her boyfriend. Marta gives herself completely, drifting away from her longtime friends, until everything explodes at a party when she discovers Charlie has been seeing her best friend for weeks. The betrayal devastates her. Unable to face the summer she had imagined, she returns with her family to <i>El Huerto<\/i>, the very place she had wanted to escape.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">Years go by, and Marta enters adulthood. At twenty-two, she is at university and planning to move to the United States thanks to a scholarship that would allow her to study abroad. But then her grandmother falls ill. She brings her snacks, holds her hand, and listens to stories of a life now revealed to be full of sacrifices and silences. Perhaps, without realizing it, she blended those sounds with her grandmother Anuncia\u2019s name until it became something new: Bela-Uncia, Bela-undia\u2026 Belaundia.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-US\">The explanation lingers in the air. It makes sense, Marta thinks.
