Against the entire Mexican judicial system, a young lawyer fights to bring justice before it is too late.<\/span><\/i><\/b>\r\n\r\n<b><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">The body of teenager Lucero Reyes is found on a bench in a park in Mexico City. Prosecutor Federico Ballesteros, whose reputation is in decline following the scandal of a police operation in a nightclub that left several dead and injured, needs to solve the new crime quickly to save his career.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">He soon finds a way out: Eric Duarte, a nurse serving a forty-year sentence for assisting his cancer-stricken mother in dying, is in prison. The deal is simple: Duarte agrees to falsely confess to Lucero\u2019s murder in exchange for having his sentence reduced to twenty years. He is taken out of prison, an invented story of jealousy and revenge is presented, and the press applauds police efficiency. Ballesteros becomes a hero again.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">But Rosario S\u00e1nchez, Lucero\u2019s best friend, knows who the real killer is. It is her own father, a violent, alcoholic taxi driver who in the past was part of a brutal criminal gang called Los Artistas del Fuego. The man became obsessed with Lucero when she came to his house to work on a school assignment with his daughter. But Rosario is afraid to speak: her father has also sexually harassed her while she slept and has threatened to kill her brother if she reports him.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">Even so, she decides to act to ensure justice is done. At the Supreme Court, she meets Emilia Miaja, a twenty-three-year-old law student working as a judicial clerk for a justice. Emilia, idealistic and frustrated by the hypocrisy of the legal world, believes Rosario\u2019s account and secures a meeting with the powerful Senator Dami\u00e1n de Angoitia, a staunch enemy of Prosecutor Ballesteros. The senator, who is also dying of cancer and seeking redemption, promises to help them capture and convict the real culprit. Once Rosario\u2019s statement is obtained, a police operation ordered by Angoitia arrests her father and finds evidence of semen and Lucero\u2019s underwear in his room. The evidence is irrefutable.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">However, Ballesteros does not give up. His career is at stake, and he would not survive the scandal if it were revealed that he presented a false culprit. Through his network of informants, he discovers that Senator De Angoitia\u2019s young lover, a man named Marlon, has been recorded selling drugs. With this footage, Ballesteros blackmails De Angoitia: Marlon\u2019s freedom and the disappearance of the video in exchange for the senator stepping back and forcing the leaders of the police operation to admit they followed a false lead and that the real killer is, in fact, Eric Duarte, the nurse already imprisoned. De Angoitia, torn between his pursuit of justice and his love for Marlon, yields to the pressure. A judge denies the detention order citing irregularities in the arrest, and the murderer is released.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span lang=\"EN-GB\">Emilia, who has followed the case in desperation, finds out when it is already too late. The culprit returns home, locks Rosario, her mother, and her brother in a room, douses the apartment with gasoline, and sets it on fire. Senator De Angoitia, devastated by his own betrayal and exhausted by cancer, travels to Oregon to spend his final days. Ballesteros preserves his prestige at the cost of three innocent lives. Emilia, consumed by guilt and depression, abandons her legal career and retreats to Xalapa to devote herself to the cello. In music, she finds the only possible solace in a country where the law serves only the powerful, no matter who dies.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\r\n\r\n<b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">RELEVANT INFORMATION:<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> Gerardo Laveaga is a Mexican writer, lawyer, and academic. Throughout his career, he has received numerous distinctions, including the <b>National Youth Award<\/b> (1985), the <b>\u201cJes\u00fas Reyes Heroles\u201d Excellence Mention<\/b> (1985), the <b>Jos\u00e9 Pag\u00e9s Llergo National Journalism Award<\/b> (2006), and various awards for his work in the legal field.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Justice<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> is a legal thriller with a strong element of social critique: through a murder and its consequences, it portrays the entrenched corruption within the Mexican system. The novel alternates between several well-developed characters and is structured in short chapters that lend it a fast pace and constant tension. This same structure makes it ideal for a dynamic audiovisual adaptation, close to a realistic thriller, in which the critical portrayal of the country\u2019s institutions carries as much weight as the
