His passion for reading took him to study the Latin-American Boom writers, especially Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez, Julio Cort\u00e1zar and Juan Rulfo. In poetry, his referents are Jos\u00e9 Asunci\u00f3n Silva, Le\u00f3n de Greiff and Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca.\r\n\r\nHe started to write in the 70s and, ever since then, he has been publishing his work in Colombia, Mexico, Spain or Germany, among other countries. Although some of his works are set in New York (where he lived for 16 years), most of his novels are set in his original Colombia.\r\n\r\nThe German newspaper <em>Die Zeit<\/em> and<em> The Guardian<\/em> consider him as the best kept secret of the Latin-American literature, since he is highly acclaimed by critics and audience. The Guardian talks about him as an author who did not need many years to find his voice, as it was clear and exceptional from the very beginning, his level never lowered down.
