Su pasi\u00f3n por la lectura lo llev\u00f3 a estudiar a escritores del boom latinoamericano, especialmente Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez, Julio Cort\u00e1zar y Juan Rulfo. En poes\u00eda, sus referentes son Jos\u00e9 Asunci\u00f3n Silva, Le\u00f3n de Greiff y Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca.\r\n\r\nComenz\u00f3 a escribir en la d\u00e9cada de los 70 y desde entonces no ha parado, publicando sus libros en Colombia, M\u00e9xico, Espa\u00f1a o Alemania, entre otros pa\u00edses. A excepci\u00f3n de algunos poemas y cuentos que se sit\u00faan en Nueva York, donde vivi\u00f3 16 a\u00f1os, el resto de su obra se centra en Colombia.\r\n\r\nEl peri\u00f3dico alem\u00e1n <em>Die Zeit<\/em> y <em>The Guardian<\/em> lo describen como el secreto mejor guardado de la literatura latinoamericana, ya que goza de gran respeto de la cr\u00edtica y del p\u00fablico. <em>The Guardian <\/em>ha hablado de \u00e9l como un autor al que no le han hecho falta demasiados a\u00f1os para encontrar su voz, pues fue clara y magistral desde su primera obra, sin bajar el nivel hasta la \u00faltima.
