An unidentified corpse and the disappearance of the middle son turn the Elordi family farmhouse into a board of intersecting suspicions. While the police attempt to decipher a crime shrouded in shadows, the family is forced to confront its own wounds. The latest novel by one of the most powerful voices in Basque noir.
On the night of San Juan, Alba Pereira bursts barefoot and covered in blood into the Elordi family farmhouse, convinced that her partner, Julen, has been murdered. She has just fled in a state of shock from the mountain, after waking up in a tent soaked in blood, beside the lifeless body of a man she believes to be Julen. That cry for help triggers an investigation that soon exposes the cracks in one of the area’s most respected business families, a clan obsessed with appearances and legacy, where every silence comes at a price.
From that moment on, Alba becomes the epicenter of a case that overwhelms her. Alone, injured, and suffering from memory gaps, she tries to reconstruct a night she barely remembers and prove that she is not the murderer some are ready to turn her into. However, the police investigation reveals an unexpected twist: the body found in the tent is not Julen’s, but Igor’s, a backpacker with no apparent connection to the family. While public opinion assumes that Julen has fled, the Elordi farmhouse closes in on itself: inside, someone knows more than they admit.
As the investigation progresses—focused both on Julen’s disappearance and the backpacker’s murder—the officers and Alba herself follow a trail that leads to the heart of the family conflict. The multimillion-euro sale of the company comes to light, promoted by Julen and fiercely opposed by his older brother, Xabier, who is willing to stop it at any cost. In the shadows also appears Lorenzo, the family’s lawyer, a figure always useful but never acknowledged, marked by an old wound of belonging.
The final revelation comes when Julen’s body is discovered hidden in the old dining room of the farmhouse. It had been there since the very night of San Juan. His disappearance had been a farce sustained by fear, convenience, and the silence of a family that chose to protect its name rather than face the truth. Alba was never part of that cover-up: while the Elordis remained silent, she bore a guilt that did not belong to her.
In the end, the truth prevails. Lorenzo, the Elordi family’s lawyer and the patriarch’s illegitimate son, killed Julen during an argument over the sale of the company. After a lifetime of serving a family that never accepted him as one of their own, the imminent loss of the company—and with it, his only place in the world—pushes him to the edge. The murder is not an act of ambition, but of identity-driven desperation. Gripped by panic, Lorenzo later kills Igor to construct an alibi and frame Alba, the most vulnerable piece on the board.
Finally freed from all suspicion, Alba can begin again. The Elordi family, however, is left irreparably broken, forced to face the consequences of having preserved their legacy above the truth.
Un asunto de familia is an intimate and emotional thriller in which crime transcends murder and reveals the extent to which a powerful family can destroy everything—even their own—with the sole aim of sustaining a lie.
