Camilo José Cela

Camilo José Cela was one of the most celebrated authors of world literature. After being expelled from several schools due to his rebellious personality, and after recovering from tuberculosis, he passed his exams and started studying a degree in Medicine. Cela used to attend Pedro Salinas’ Contemporary Spanish Literature lectures as an auditing student at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, where he befriended philologist Alonso Zamora Vicente, as well as Miguel Hernández, María Zambrano and Max Aub.

During the Civil War, he managed to escape the zone of the rebels and enlisted as a soldier, but he was wounded and hospitalized in Logroño. After the war, he decided to quit studying and started to write.

Camilo José Cela was awarded with the  Nobel Prize of Literature, the Premio Nacional de Narrativa, the Premio Sant Jordi de las Letras, the Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras, the Premio Planeta and the Premio Cervantes, among many other prestigious international awards. He was also give the Gran Cruz de la Orden de Isabel la Católica, and King Juan Carlos I named him Marquis of Iria Flavia for his literary career.
