Gioconda Belli is a Nicaraguan poet and writer. Very active during the Sandinista fight, Belli was persecuted during the dictatorship and she took up exile in Mexico and Costa Rica. This was until the triumph of the Sandinist Revolution in 1979, when she went back to Nicaragua and worked in several positions within the new government until 1994.

Belli is a prestigious author awarded with many prizes like the Pluma de Plata Award, the French Fine Arts Award, the Mariano Fiallos Gil Award, the Casa de las Américas Award, the Poesía Generación del 27 Award, the Internacional de Poesía Ciudad de Melilla Award, the Biblioteca Breve de Novela Award, the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Award, the Hispanoamericano de Novela La Otra Orilla Award, the Mérito Literario Internacional Andrés Sabella Award, and the Eñe Award. Apart from this, she was a finalist of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and has received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France and the Medalla de Reconocimiento of the Rubén Darío National Theater. She is a member of the Academia Nicaragüense de la Lengua and of the PEN Club International.
