Javier Montes is a Spanish writer, translator, and art critic born in Madrid. He holds a degree in Art History and has built a career that bridges literary creation, essay writing, and critical reflection on the visual arts. He taught Art History at the Spanish School of Malabo and has been a regular contributor to publications such as El País, ABC, Granta, Artforum, and Literary Hub.
His debut novel was awarded the José María de Pereda Prize. In 2010, he received the Anagrama Essay Prize, together with Andrés Barba, and in the same year was selected by Granta as one of the best young Spanish-language writers.
Among his later works, particularly noteworthy is Light of Fire (2020), a fictionalized biography of the Brazilian dancer and vedette of the same name.
