Daughter of a sculptor and a photographer, Markéta Baňková (Czech Republic, 1969) studied at the Studio of Graphics and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In 1992 she also studied at Middlesex Polytechnic in London and in 1993 at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, USA. In 2002, she was a finalist for the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize for visual artists and artists under the age of 35.

 

RELEVANT INFORMATION

The themes of Baňková ‘s books are the mysteries of the natural sciences, which she approaches through fiction. Quantum mechanics, genetics, neuroscience and hypnosis are presented in the everyday setting of interpersonal relationships, often incorporating black humour and a touch of the absurd.

The Magpie in the Realm of Entropy, which popularises the laws of physics, became a bestseller and was awarded the Magnesia Litera Discovery of the Year prize (the most prestigious Czech award).

Holding a degree in Fine Art (Printmaking and New Media, her student page) from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, she provides her own illustrations to her books.
