Jack, Knight and King (Jota, Caballo y Rey)

A political satire about power, vanity, corruption… and a horse.

Set in the Latin American dictatorship landscape of the 50s belonging to tropical tyrants that were corrupt, violent and usually eccentric. With the dictatorial regime of Rojas Pinilla in the Colombia of 1954, this novel is an analysis of power, vanity and corruption with a comical tone.

A famous race horse, Triguero, arises as a rival for the popular sympathy of the bombastic dictator, so he is determined to beat him in his own field, that is, the race tracks. For this, he buys a thoroughbred destined to dethrone Triguero.

The novel jumps from the palace environment to that of the stables, and a good part of its events are told through the eyes and words of a young bourgeois student who is discovering the city, the friends from the streets, the different social classes, the miseries of power and the moral world of the adults. In sum: the social reality.
