Meninas (Las Meninas) 

Set in the Court of Felipe IV, the story is centered on the figure of the painter Diego Velázquez, who is involved in various court intrigues due to the creation of his masterpiece “Las Meninas”. A thriller fantasy about the life of the most outstanding painter of his time and the events that surround his life in a crucial moment that marks the Golden Age. Don Diego is victim of a conspiracy set by his enemies who report him to the Holy Office (the Inquisition’s Court) for the contents of his paintings. This situation is linked to the love intrigues going on, in which two female characters participate: Juana Pacheco, Velazquez’s wife, and Marcela de Ulloa, in love with the painter.

 

RELEVANT FACTS: The fascinating historical figure of Diego de Velázquez has not yet been exploited audiovisually. In addition, the technique of immersion in the painting “Las Meninas” has an extraordinary visual force. On the other hand, the ingredient of the palace intrigues endows the history of potential for a broad development.

This work has been premiered professionally in Madrid, London (dramatized reading in the National Gallery) and Timisoara. It has been produced for television by Televisión Española and Czechoslovakian Television. Antonio Buero Vallejo received the María Rolland Prize for Meninas.

Buero Vallejo is the great theatrical author of the twentieth century. He won the Premio Miguel de Cervantes (1986) and the Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas (1996). In addition, he has received in four occasions the Premio Nacional de Teatro and also the Honorary Max Theatre Award, among many other distinctions.
