Berta Vogler is an energetic, resourceful woman well ahead of her time. She is the grandmother of Erik Vogler, a geeky, meticulous, highly organized young man with a passion for fashion who seems to attract the most unsettling events. Together, they become entangled in terrifying murder cases, aided by Albert Zimmer, the grandson of Berta’s neighbor and the son of a peculiar pair of vampires, and by Cloé, the object of affection for both Albert and Erik.

In And It Will All Be Over, Berta arrives in Copenhagen to attend a literary event, but her stay takes an unexpected turn when a young hitman bursts into her hotel room intending to kill her. The investigation ultimately leads them to Gérard Lund, a journalist obsessed with writing the perfect novel and willing to turn murder into an art form. Kidnapped and on the verge of death, Berta survives only thanks to the unexpected intervention of the Croatian hitman, bringing an end to a case in which literature and horror are inextricably intertwined.

In The Vampires of Drawsko, Berta travels to a remote village in Poland after receiving a plea for help from her friend, Reverend Michael Engel. The story begins with the strange death of Karol Kowalski, a convicted rapist found drowned in a well. The unease turns into genuine terror when his grave is discovered desecrated and a teenage girl is found drained of blood, bearing fang marks on her neck.

As fear spreads through the village, Berta and her team investigate a chain of events connected to ancient Slavic vampire legends. Gradually, they discover that a young boy manipulated the criminal into causing his own death, inspired by the supposed appearances of the ghost of a girl who had once been one of Kowalski’s victims.

Yet a rational explanation is not enough to dispel the horror, as the dead man seemingly returns as a bloodthirsty creature. To stop him, Berta and Erik set a trap that enables them to destroy him once and for all, burying forever the dark secret threatening the town.

In The Order of the Dragon, Berta travels to the Croatian town of Samobor to investigate a series of murders connected to the legend of the Black Queen, Barbara Celjska, a feared historical figure who, according to local folklore, returns as a vampire or serpent to punish violent men.

As the investigation unfolds, Berta and her team discover that all the victims share one characteristic: they were domestic abusers. Behind the crimes appears to be a secret society composed of local women known as the Order of the Dragon, led by sisters Mia and Petra Grego, who have transformed the myth of the Black Queen into an instrument of revenge against abusers.

However, the closer they come to the truth, the harder it becomes to dismiss the possibility that supernatural forces may be involved. The investigation culminates during the Samobor Carnival in a final confrontation that exposes the cult’s activities. Although the case is officially solved, Berta and her companions leave Croatia with the unsettling feeling that the legendary Black Queen may never have been merely a myth.
