The Generals’ dinner (La cena de los generales)

This play is set in 1939 and narrated in a comedic tone. The story begins in Madrid the same day the Spanish Civil War ended. A dinner is organized in the Palace Hotel, to which all the generals of the winning side will participate. Lieutenant Medina, the coordinator of the event, has to deal with the difficulties that arise since all the cooks of this famous hotel are in prison for being communist. Facing the impossibility of hiring qualified personnel and in a desperate attempt to satisfy General Franco, he decides to get the cooks out of prison. On this basis, surreal situations start taking place.

 

RELEVANT FACTS: Acclaimed by the critics, this is both a local and a universal story, as every war -wherever it takes place- is tragic and absurd. The message is clear: “Things can be very bad, but there’s always a way out”.

José Luis Alonso de Santos has received numerous prizes for his work as a writer and as a director such as the National Theatre Prize and the MAX Theatre Award. He is presently the most acclaimed playwright in Spain and outside of Spain.
