This play goes back in time to the generation born from the Restoration of the monarchy in Spain in 1874 (related to the historical moment from his previous work The buzzing of the bees). Its representative, the Mayor of Alcúdia de Xúquer, is a corrupt politician that monopolizes the supply of (polluted) tuna to town, embezzles public funds, he is a despot and has not prepared any kind of measure against the incoming cholera plague. The new portrayed social class is unable to stop the arrival of the cholera and the wrath of the gods will manifest in an unavoidable disaster.
