José Ignacio (Chascas) Valenzuela is a Chilean writer and screenwriter. His work includes more than twenty books published in multiple languages and several successful television series. As an educator, he has taught screenwriting and creative writing throughout much of Latin America, as well as at universities in Mexico, Chile, the United States, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

Valenzuela is the creator of the hit Netflix series Who Killed Sara?, which became the platform’s most successful non-English-language series in U.S. history. He has published more than thirty novels and has written thirteen television series and films in Chile, Mexico, the United States, and Puerto Rico. He was selected by The New York Times’ About.com as one of the ten best young Latin American writers.

As a screenwriter, he has received numerous awards, including Best Screenwriter of the Year from the PROCO Institute of Communication and the Diosa de Plata International Film Festival. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the television series Amores. His telenovela La casa de al lado, broadcast by Telemundo (the second-largest Spanish-language content provider in the United States), won “Best Novela of the Year” at the Miami Life Awards. His telenovela Santa Diabla, also aired by Telemundo, received the “Novela of the Year” award at the Tu Mundo Awards. Other projects as screenwriter and showrunner include the series Donde hubo fuego, Candy Cruz, and Las Hermanas Guerra.
