From Cayetana to Cayetano

The historical burden of a family dynasty.

Being part of the House of Alba is a tremendous privilege, but it also entails a huge responsibility for which one has to pay a high price: the loss of one’s capacity for making personal decisions.

Cayetano Martínez de Irujo, fifth son of the Duchess of Alba and current Duke of Arjona, has been paying that price since he was just a child. He was raised in the most luxurious Spanish palaces but, ironically, he only felt loneliness, sadness and lack of affection. He and his siblings were educated by nannies who, instead of giving them a good education, hit them with bamboo canes.

When he was just 16 years old, Cayetano had an affair with a much older woman. She was a married woman, whose husband was always away travelling. She would give Cayetano money so that he could pay for the expensive and luxurious dinners. They would spend the weekend together and, on Monday morning, she would take him to school.

Cayetano also had a turbulent youth, full of excess. Along with Pocholo Martínez Bordiú, Cayetano conquered the Madrid nightlife.  Nights that lasted for six days, packed with cocaine and seduction. Unfortunately, addiction took Cayetano to experience some of the darkest moments of his life.

Despite assuring that his mother, Cayetana of Alba, was not an exemplary mother, Cayetano only has great memories of her.

Since the death of the Duchess, Cayetano’s relationship with his older brother, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart, current Duke of Alba has suffered a lot of strain. Cayetano claims his brother, Carlos, has been trying to keep him away from the family businesses.

These are only some of the many passages in Cayetano’s life. A heartbreaking, crude and unknown story of one of the most famous aristocratic families in the world.
