San Felipe’s caretakers (Los conserjes de San Felipe (Cádiz, 1812))

In 1812, in the days before swearing the Spanish Constitution, a group of janitors and two cleaning ladies of the place where the deputies will sign the constitution, are planning to steal it to blackmail the deputies and make them pay for their work. But others, had steal it before them and they have to go to El Puerto de Santa María to get it back.

 

RELEVANT FACTS: The story is placed at the beginning of the XIX century, in Cadiz, and it is a marvelous example of period dramedy with parallel war and love plots. The author plays with the lives of the characters and the death of some of them will serve as an ethical lesson for the spectators. The period nature of the story is crucial, as the story itself is affected by it.

José Luis Alonso de Santos has received numerous prizes for his work as a writer and as a director such as the National Theatre Prize and the MAX Theatre Award. He is presently the most acclaimed playwright in Spain and outside of Spain.
