Enrique Jardiel Poncela (Madrid, 1901) was a Spanish writer and playwright. He is one of the most relevant comedians and dramaturges of Spain’s 20th century. His writing is related to the Avant-garde and the theatre of the absurd. His comedies are restaged to this day, receiving great popular and critical acclaim. His novels are also reprinted every year: a great number of reeditions, biographies, theatres and documentaries claim his importance. Many films are based on his texts. He is an essential figure in order to understand contemporary Spanish theatre.

 

INTERESTING FACTS

The Spanish Society of Authors and Publishers gives every year the Premio de Teatro Jardiel Poncela. 

Jardiel Poncela was awarded the most prestigious of all prizes in Spanish language dramaturgy: The National Theatre Prize in 1945.
